The Great Siege of Malta
In 1565 Suleyman the Magnificent, the Ottoman Sultan sent an army of 40,000 men and a fleet of 200 ships to capture the island of Malta. Led by their Grand Master the Knights of the Order of St John of Jerusalem, together with the people withstood a siege of nearly four months duration. The defeat of the Turkish Empire checked their expansion into the western Mediterranean.
